ABS-CBN is floored by the recent achievement of its movie, “In the Name of Love,” which landed on the Associated Press list of Top 20 highest-grossing movies for last month. The list was based on a Hollywood.com report.
The network said it was a “happy surprise” for the people behind the movie, which had taken a year to make. “However, we don’t know [how the ranking was arrived at],” said Roxy Liquigan, ad prom officer of Star Cinema, ABS-CBN film production arm.
An AP story dated May 19 put the Olivia Lamasan drama in the 15th slot among movies that led the international box-office race that weekend. According to the report, “In the Name of Love” grossed $1,917, 443 in 87 locations around the world, excluding North America.
The top five in the report, written by Paul Dergarabedian, were Hollywood films “Fast (and Furious) 5,” “Thor,” “Priest,” “Rio” and “Water for Elephants.” The list was compiled by Rentrak Theatrical and first released by Hollywood.com. Dergarabedian is president of the Box-Office Division of Hollywood.com and is a longtime box-office analyst for AP.
Liquigan is actually perplexed, because the Lamasan drama, which premiered in Manila on May 11, started its international screening only last weekend in key areas in the United States, Canada and the Middle East, and only on weekends.
“In the Name of Love” is the love story of a dance coach (Aga Muhlach) and his student (Angel Locsin), who is about to marry a politician’s son (Jake Cuenca).
Liquigan said Rentrak could be “just a new group.” Otherwise, he said, Star Cinema films like Chito Roño’s “Sukob,” Cathy Garcia-Molina’s “You Changed My Life,” and Mae Cruz’s “Catch Me I’m In Love,” all of which had broken box-office records as well, would have been listed in their respective periods of release.
(A quick search on the Net revealed that Rentrak is a media measurement services provider, among other things. Its International Box-Office Essentials brand “provides clients with box-office information for 26 countries. The data is collected through an electronic connection with thousands of theater box offices,” according to www.rentrak.com.)
“In any case, this means a lot to us,” said Liquigan. “It’s an indicator that we’re now at par with Hollywood films when it comes to viewership.”

Two Filipino-American actors join Johnny Depp in his quest for the Fountain of Youth in Walt Disney Pictures’ “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” They are Daphne Joy and Michael Rosales, who play a mermaid and a pirate on the Queen Anne’s Revenge, respectively.
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penélope Cruz), Jack Sparrow (Depp) is not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica.
A multicultural actor/rap artist/performer, Michael Ilano Rosales was chosen to play a “pirate from the Philippines” from a pool of over 4,000 aspirants. It was also his first-ever acting audition. His Hollywood journey would take him from his home of Hawaii, across 11,000 kilometers to London, where his scenes in “On Stranger Tides” were shot.
As a musician, Rosales transforms into Mic3—Mic (Mike), short for Michael, 3 for the third child, and the 3 for the main islands of the Philippines. His goal is to reconstruct today’s hip-hop landscape, to bring it back to its artistic foundation and roots and provide a meaningful message to the listener. In 2008, Rosales released his first full-length album, “Respect My Pride.” The album features English and Filipino language music that inspires an appreciation of the Filipino culture and heritage. A feature video, “Balikbayan,” was filmed in the Philppines, reinforcing the cultural messages found in his music behind a backdrop of historical Philippine landmarks. Rosales has shared the stage with several notable performers, including Damian Marley and Busta Rhymes.

Counting the recent hit “Just Go With It” and such popular TV shows as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Criminal Minds” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to her credits, Daphne Joy was born and raised in the heart of Olongapo, Philippines. Although her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was just 8 years old, she was able to retain her Filipino culture and upbringing. Despite the language barriers and overall culture shock, Daphne was able to completely readjust to her new surroundings, and with her natural beauty, easygoing personality and wit she made friends and was able to adapt to the American way of life.
Intrigued by her new country’s pop culture, Daphne became interested in entertainment, becoming involved in dance groups, choir, cheerleading and talent shows. At the age of 18 she transferred that interest to acting, and was soon working in front of the camera. She was also featured in several A-list recording artists’ music videos, along with commercials, national print campaigns, magazine covers and features.
Opening across the Philippines on May 2011, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Spider-Man reboot is being shot in RED EPIC 3D, has John Schwartzman all kinds of excited.
You know that untitled Spider-man project that's set to revitalize the franchise at some point in 2012? Yeah, that's being shot in 3D (not news) using 3ality rigs and RED EPIC cameras (superhotawesome news). Peter Jackson already scooped up 30 EPICs to help him shoot his next big venture, The Hobbit, in 3D, but he's been beaten to the digital cinematography punch by the producers of the next Spidey flick, who have cornered a quartet of the cameras and actually started shooting with them on set yesterday. John Schwartzman, the dude responsible for filming the whole thing, has been extolling the virtues of using such fancy gear over on the RED forums, which is also where he promises his crew will be making further comments detailing the user experience. In slightly less thrilling RED news, the Scarlet S35 is being renamed to the EPIC Lite and will suffer the upheaval of having its features and price changed

Synopsis
In the futuristic action-thriller Repo Men, humans have extended and improved our lives through highly sophisticated and expensive mechanical organs created by a company called The Union. The dark side of these medical breakthroughs is that if you don't pay your bill, The Union sends its highly skilled repo men to take back its property... with no concern for your comfort or survival.

But when he suffers a cardiac failure on the job, he awakens to find himself fitted with the company's top-of-the-line heart-replacement... as well as a hefty debt. But a side effect of the procedure is that his heart's no longer in the job. When he can't make the payments, The Union sends its toughest enforcer, Remy's former partner Jake (Forest Whitaker), to track him down.

Writers Eric Garcia and Garrett Lerner team with director Miguel Sapochnik to adapt Garcia's novel about a repo man named Remy whose body has been constructed almost entirely of artificial organs. When Remy (Jude Law) fails to keep up on payments for his recent heart transplant, his former partner vows to take back the organ by force if necessary. Meanwhile, Remy finds an unexpected ally in the form of his long-lost wife, Beth (Sonia Braga), who has also been retrofitted with numerous artificial organs. Now, despite the fact that they haven't seen each other since Remy joined the army ten years ago, the desperate repo man and his sympathetic wife attempt a daring escape from a man who holds the lives of millions in the palm of his hands. Forest Whitaker and Liev Schreiber co-star.

Fall in love with the first must-see romantic comedy of the year.
WHO: Catherine Zeta-Jones stars as a 40-year-old single mother who captivates her children’s baby-sitter who happens to be a 25-year-old man.
Starring opposite Zeta-Jones is Justin Bartha from the films The Hangover and National Treasure.
WHAT’S IT ABOUT: A 25-year-old man (Bartha) works as a nanny to the children of his 40-year-old single-mother neighbor (Zeta-Jones). The two start an unlikely romance they did not expect to happen.
POSITIVE: Catherine Zeta Jones is a gorgeous cougar and her attack to the role doesn’t come as a cradle-robbing predator but someone who has warmth, fell in love and having trouble with the saying “age doesn’t matter.”
The movie, however, belongs to Justin Bartha. He is charming, adorable and very sincere with his portrayal of the 25-year-old nanny who fell in love with the kids and their mom.
The film has its funny moments and concludes in a feel-good, yet unconventional ending.
NEGATIVE: There’s objectionable language used around and by children. It could have been a good family movie but because of some languages used, it’s PG-13.
OUR TAKE: The Rebound is the first must-see movie of the year after the MMFF season. It’s adorable, it’s sweet, and it will put a smile on your face after watching it.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in one of next year’s big summer movies, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which is produced by Walt Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
Disney has released the first set of movie posters for the said film, the one showing Jake as the Prince of Persia and the other showing the gorgeous Gemma Arterton, Jake’s leading lady.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is based on the massively popular series of videogames, the story sees Gyllenhaal as a ‘rogue prince’ Dastan and Gemma Arterton as ‘mysterious princess’ Tamina, who reluctantly team up to safeguard an ancient dagger that could release the Sands of Time, allowing its possessor to reverse time and rule the world.
Also starring in the movie are Ben Kingsley (Gandhi) and Alfred Molina (Spider Man 3) under the helm of Mike Newell, director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Prince of Persia is coming to theaters on May 28, 2010.

"Fast & Furious" left the competition in the dust with a $72.5 million opening weekend, the best so far this year.
That topped last weekend's $59.3 million debut for DreamWorks Animation's "Monsters vs. Aliens," which slipped to second place with $33.5 million, raising its 10-day total to $105.7 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Universal's "Fast & Furious" also raced to a record for April debuts, easily passing the previous best of $42.2 million set in 2003 by "Anger Management."
It was a blockbuster opening more customary to summer. But Hollywood has been extending its busy season more and more by placing summer-style flicks earlier in the year.
"It's summer time in April," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers. "We've seen the summer season stretch from what used to be Memorial Day through Labor Day, then the first of May through Labor Day. Now maybe with `Fast & Furious,' it's going to be early April as the beginning of summer."
